One of my favourite places in Mumbai

Dear Readers,
In Mumbai, sometimes the din and noise takes over. One of my favourite places for peace and quiet is the Haji Ali shrine, off Worli. But here again, to snatch moments of peace it is essential to visit early morning, else crowds throng this place.
Have a nice weekend.

What a waste of a Monday! Bandhs should be banned!!!

Dear Readers,

There is a nationwide strike in India today, called by the opposition parties to protest against the hike in fuel prices and rising inflation.

Our office is shut as are many others. It is such a waste of a productive day. We will make up for it by working this Saturday, but I wonder whether Saturday will be as productive. Why can't the opposition think of another method to protest? Such as wearing black-bands while attending the Parliament? Why hold the entire country to ransom?

Given the economic turmoil, I think India is doing pretty well. An article in today's Economic Times states that food inflation has declined to 12.92%. The government of course could not continue to subsidize petrol prices.

The opposition should ideally come up with solutions, circulate white papers to the ruling party, which the party should take into cognizance. Calling for a nationwide halt is not the answer, it creates more problems than it can solve. THIS STRIKE ITSELF HAS CAUSED INDIA 30 BILLION RUPEES ACCORDING TO CII. CAN WE AFFORD THIS? NO!

Imagine not being able to rush a loved one to the hospital, or not being able to cremate someone - all because of the strike! Or not being able to feed your family because you are a daily laborer and could not make anything today?

Alas the parties who went on strike, who damaged public property will thump their chests and proclaim their bravery. Can politics get any more shallow than this? THINK ABOUT IT.

PS: Since I've recently had my photographs developed, here is one of Mumbai's skyline, taken off the HajiAli coast. Tiny fishing boats share the same space as rising skyscrapers. Yes, Mumbai embraces all and rightfully so.

Humid and wet - Mumbai

The clouds are dripping. Yes, dripping in the right word to use. Heavy raindrops seem to descend slowly. It is not a downpour, it is not a light drizzle. The clouds are hanging heavily over the sky line of Mumbai.

I shot this photograph off The Gateway of India. But, well, we do need the rain. Our catchment areas need to fill up to ensure that the water shortage is a thing of the past. I wonder when it will be possible to make sea water potable?

Have a nice weekend.
